Genesis 1:3 states, "And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light," marking God's first spoken words in the Bible to bring physical light into a dark, formless universe.
God creates by simply speaking; His voice alone transforms nonexistence into reality.
He brings orders out of chaos. Light breaks the primordial darkness, initiating the shift from disorder to a structured, functioning cosmos.
This act establishes the first day of creation, setting a rhythm of light and time before the sun and moon are created on the fourth day.
This verse is far more than the literal creation of physical light. It is a symbol of God's goodness, truth, or a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ as the spiritual "light of the world".
The verse emphasizes that creation originates from a good and radiant God, showing that the universe begins with clarity rather than darkness.
God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness," marking the first time God evaluates His creation as good and establishes order by dividing two opposing forces (GENESIS 1:4).
He looks at what He made and approves of it. This begins a recurring pattern in the creation story.
Biblically, light represents goodness, truth, and God’s presence, while darkness is unformed and empty.
Darkness is not assigned the label "good," showing that God is the author of what is beneficial and life-giving.
God creates a rhythm of day and night before the sun and moon are made on the fourth day.
Separation represents God bringing structure to a formless universe.
The light can be seen a an emanation of God's own glory, since physical luminaries appear later in the narrative and is directly connected to God’s Word. The truth is, Jesus Christ is the light of the world. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
John 1:1-5 NKJV
John uses "the Word" as a title for Jesus. It shows He did not have a beginning. He already existed before time and creation.
The verse states that the Word was with God and was God, confirming Jesus is fully divine and a distinct person within the Trinity.
John explains that all things were made through Jesus. Because He made everything, He is uncreated.
He goes on to say, “life is in Jesus, and that life lights humanity. He brings spiritual truth and reality to people.
John tells us that evil, sin, and spiritual blindness cannot overcome, master, or extinguish the light of Christ.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
