Luke warns people to watch out for greed, teaching that a person’s true worth and life do not come from owning many things.
A man in the crowd asks Jesus to force his brother to share their family inheritance with him, but Jesus refuses to act as a judge over their money fight.
Jesus looks past the immediate fight and points out the hidden root problem, which is greed and covetousness in the heart.
Jesus tells everyone to guard their hearts by staying alert ("be on your guard") because the desire for more money and things sneaks up so easily.
The phrase "life does not consist in the abundance of possessions" means your value, joy, and purpose are not measured by how rich you are or what you own.
Jesus immediately tells the Parable of the Rich Fool to show how foolish it is to hoard wealth for yourself while ignoring a rich relationship with God.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
