Where You Go I Will Go And Where You Stay I Will Stay. Your People Will Be My People And Your God My God
Jesus Welcomes All From Every Nation And Tongue
RUTH 1:16
“But Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God.
”Ruth 1:16 NKJV

This verse is a foundational biblical vow where the Moabite widow Ruth pledges unwavering loyalty, familial devotion, and spiritual conversion to her mother-in-law, Naomi, saying: “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”
Ruth chooses to stay with a bitter, grieving Naomi rather than returning to the safety and familiar comfort of her native Moab, which represents selfless, covenantal love.
By stating “your God my God,” Ruth formally renounces the pagan gods of Moab (such as Chemosh) and embraces Yahweh, the God of Israel. This pictured the church of to today made up of both Jews and Gentiles.
As a Moabite, Ruth belonged to a nation with a historically hostile relationship to Israel, yet her choice demonstrates that God’s grace and inclusion extend beyond ethnic or national boundaries.
Ruth’s loyalty leads her to Bethlehem, where she marries Boaz. Through this lineage, she becomes the great-grandmother of King David and an ancestor in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
Because of its deep expression of lifelong commitment and devotion, the verse is frequently used today as a reading or vow in wedding ceremonies and services of deep friendship, and is a picture of the bride of Christ made up of people from every nation and tongue.
It’s very encouraging to know that regardless of skin colour, ethnic background, past sins, faults and failures, Jesus loves us all and wants no one to perish, but for all to come to Him in repentance (2 Peter 3:9).
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
