Speak To Your Soul
PSALM 42:11
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.

This verse, I believe was written by David, serves as a powerful model for processing discouragement, teaching us three main truths.
The psalmist openly acknowledges his sadness and turmoil. By talking to his soul instead of just listening to it, he practices healthy objectivity. He confronts his heavy emotions rather than ignoring or faking them.
I encourage you, when you are feeling down cast, speak to your soul, take those emotional thoughts captive, and bring them to the obedience of Christ (2 CORINTHIANS 10:5).
Our soul is our mind, will, and emotions, our very consciousness.
Emotions are not a tool of discernment, but when left unchecked, they will feed our heart (subconscious mind) with lies based not on truth, but what we feel.
They can produce feelings of sadness, self pity, and anger, through the smallest of problems and joy and excitement in sinful situations.
By speaking directly to your soul, you are able to rebuke those lies and replace them with the only truth of Jesus Christ.
Instead of focusing on his circumstances, David deliberately chooses to put his "hope in God". This anchors him during times when his feelings threaten to overwhelm his faith.
The verse ends with a declaration of faith ("I will yet praise him"). It is a reminder that present struggles are temporary and that God remains a personal Savior.
Whatever is troubling you today, take those thoughts captive and bring them to the obedience of Christ. Remind yourself that this life is temporary and the best is yet to come.
Put your trust in God and sing His praises, for he is worthy of all praise and watch the darkness flee (JOHN 1:5; JAMES 4;7; EPHESIANS 5:8).
