The Beatitudes

MATHEW 5:3-12

“”Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:3-12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

In the Sermon on the mount, Jesus started His Sermon with words that seem to contradict each other. But the truth is, God’s way of living is some what different to the world’s.

God’s way, is to give when others take, to love when others hate, to help when others pass by, and to encourage when others abuse. God’s way of life is based on selfless love.

By giving up one’s own rights that he can help or serve others, he will one day receive every blessing God has in store for him.

The Beatitudes are blessings recounted by Jesus, and can be understood in many ways:

They are a code of ethics and a standard of conduct for all believers. They contrast kingdom values, what is eternal with worldly values, and what is temporary. They contrast the superficial “faith” of the Pharisees with the true faith of devout Christians, and they show the Old Testament expectations will be fulfilled in the new Kingdom.

Each beatitude tells us how to be blessed by God.

It implies the inevitable state of those who are in Christ; not by worldly prosperity, material blessings, money or status, but rather by faith in Jesus Christ; a state of mind far more than just happy, content, fulfilled, and at peace, but totally satisfied regardless of circumstance.

The truth is, ““Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭17:7-8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.
