Here, King Solomon warns us against pride and relying entirely on our own opinions or judgment.
He tells us to respect and honor God instead of ourselves.
He advises us to turn away from wrong actions and sin.
Following these wise words, takes us to verse 8, “It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones,” The Scripture presents Solomon as a wise public speaker, often called "Lady Wisdom", who invites all people to choose truth, moral integrity, and life over foolishness.
Solomon chose understanding and wisdom as a gift from God (1 KINGS 3:9-12).
Wisdom is called "Lady Wisdom" in the Bible because the original Hebrew word for wisdom is grammatically feminine, and biblical authors used a literary tool called personification to present it as a female figure.
Unlike foolishness or temptation that hides in secret, wisdom calls out openly at city gates and crossroads where everyone can hear.
True wisdom means fearing God, hating evil, pride, and dishonest speech, while promoting justice and righteousness.
Wisdom claims she was present with God before the universe was made, serving as a foundational, ordering power in creation.
Finding wisdom brings life and God's favor, while rejecting it leads to self-harm.
In scripture, Lady Wisdom is set side-by-side with her opposite, the foolish woman or "Lady Folly".
Lady Wisdom offers life, safety, and lasting riches, whilst Lady Folly offers loud, destructive, and dangerous choices.
This vivid imagery helped teachers in ancient Israel capture the attention of young listeners and guide them toward making good moral decisions.
Today, God is calling us believers out to make good and wise moral decisions grounded in His Word.
Therefore, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
James 1:5-8 NKJV
