The Heart Of A Man Plans His Way, But The LORD Establishes His Steps
Man Makes Many Plans
PROVERBS 16:9
“A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.”
Proverbs 16:9 NKJV

This verse, attributed to King Solomon, tells us that while people have the freedom and wisdom to make goals and map out their futures, God is ultimately in control of the final outcome and direction of their lives.
People are expected to use their minds, think ahead, and make practical plans. Planning itself is not discouraged, but God holds the ultimate authority. He guides the actual path, sometimes altering human timelines or redirecting steps for a greater purpose.
The verse relieves the heavy pressure of needing to control every single result. It encourages people to hold their plans loosely and trust a higher wisdom.
We should view the verse as an invitation to partner with God, making thoughtful plans while remaining open to His redirection.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed regarding how this verse interacts with free will. Some believe God sovereignly overrides and directs all steps, while others argue that human free will operates within boundaries set by God, or that God guides those who choose to submit to Him.
The truth is, both views can be right, and are dependent on God’s will, one’s calling and their walk with God.
God certainly allows the rebellious and un-believers to go their own way, but “There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.”
Proverbs 19:21 NKJV
Regardless of man’s plans, ultimately, nothing can stop God’s plans.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
