I Am Not Trying To Please People. I Want To Please God

GALATIANS 1:10

“For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”

Galatians 1:10 tells us that a person cannot truly serve Christ while making human approval or popularity their main goal.

The apostle Paul wrote this verse around AD 49 in his letter to the churches of Galatia. Some religious opponents accused Paul of changing or watering down the gospel message to make it easier for people to accept. Paul defends his honesty by asking tough rhetorical questions: "Am I trying to win the approval of people, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

Paul points out that you cannot chase human applause and divine obedience at the same time. Trying to please everyone often forces a person to compromise the truth.

When Paul says "if I were still trying to please people," he refers to his life before he became a Christian. As a Pharisee, he sought the approval of religious leaders and society by persecuting the church. Encountering Jesus gave him a new master.

So many in church today seek to please church leaders in order to gain status or recognition, but our true goal is to please God by believing and being obedient to Him, even when it goes against church policies or projects. The truth is, if we are compromising God’s will to please people, we are not really serving Him at all. We are either serving man or satisfying our own lust, or both.

The word used for servant (doulos) often means a bondservant or slave. Paul means his life belongs completely to Jesus Christ, as does every committed believer, meaning our words and message like Paul’s, must answer to God alone rather than human opinion.
