This verse is part of a collection of psalms sung by ancient Jewish travelers as they journeyed uphill to Jerusalem.
Traveler’s looked up at the dangerous mountain paths where bandits and wild animals hid, realizing earthly geography could not protect them.
The psalmist shifts focus from physical surroundings to God, stating that true protection and strength originate solely from Yahweh (verse 1).
By calling God the "Maker of heaven and earth," the verse emphasizes that the Creator holds supreme power over all physical and spiritual dangers.
It is encouraging to know that no matter what trouble we face in this dark world, God is with us and providing everything we need for life and godliness.”
“I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. God is portrayed as a guardian who never grows tired, slumbers, or sleeps, ensuring the traveler's foot will not slip on dangerous paths.
The Lord acts as a protective shade on the right hand, shielding individuals from the scorching sun by day and dangers by night.
He promises to preserve the believer's soul and guard all their comings and goings from that time forth and forevermore, emphasising that we believers can confidently put our trust in Him.
