What Is A Proverb Not?

PROVERBS 1:7

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭1‬:‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

This verse serves as the foundational cornerstone for the entire book of Proverbs.

It functions like a mature adult's respect for fire or power; it acknowledges reality, authority, and consequences without hiding in panic.

It is the starting point, the beginning, and just as the alphabet is required for reading, recognising God's supreme authority is the mandatory first step for true understanding.

The contrast is he who rejects guidance.

The biblical "fool" is not lacking intelligence, but rather moral humility.

Fools who reject correction, rely solely on their own prideful thinking, and live as though they know more than God, and He does not matter.

But what is a proverb, or what it is not?

A proverb is not a promise or a saying that is definitely guaranteeing the outcome that is being discussed.

The Hebrew word for proverb is mashal, which means comparison, similar, parallel.

In short, a proverb is a figure of speech in which the author uses comparisons in order to present a pithy, poignant observation or instruction. A proverb is a timeless truth in the form of a simple illustration that exposes a fundamental reality of life. Proverbs are practical (not theoretical), and easy to memorise.

Are you putting into practice the discipline of Biblical memorisation and applying it to real life situations?

By studying God’s Word, one can gain knowledge, but true wisdom and understanding only comes from God. True positive change comes from applying His Word to your life and walking in it.

All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.

Please share to our brothers and sisters all around the world.
