John tells us that accepting and understanding God's spiritual truth through Jesus Christ releases people from the spiritual bondage, deception, and the penalty of sin.

Jesus later stated in John 14:6 that He is "the way, the truth, and the life". Knowing the truth means having a personal relationship with Jesus who is the only truth that can be relied upon in this world.

God's Word refers to the teachings, promises, and gospel message taught by Jesus as absolute reality.

The truth cuts through the lies and deception of the world-the light (Jesus) shines through the darkness, (every ungodly power, agenda, lie, and evil thing of the world), and the darkness could not comprehend it JOHN 1:4-5).

But what is "Freedom"?

Freedom is freedom from the power of sin that brings forth death; freedom from captivity and bondage of the devil, and freedom to live a godly life and serve Christ.

Jesus explained in the next verses that anyone who sins is a slave to sin. The freedom He offers breaks the power of a sinful lifestyle.

When Jesus spoke these words, His listeners argued that they were descendants of Abraham and had never been slaves to anyone. Jesus was not talking about a political or physical liberty, but rather, a deep spiritual and physical freedom in this world of bondage.

Knowing the truth frees people from spiritual death and eternal condemnation, and brings with it peace and joy in the chaos of this dark world. Not the peace of the world, but the peace of God (JOHN 14:27) that surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (PHILIPPIANS 4:7). Furthermore, joy in the Lord is our strength (NEHEMIAH 8:10).
