Here, the verse tells us that the Holy Spirit brings spiritual liberation. Believers are freed from the burden of Old Testament law, the guilt of sin, and the "veil" of spiritual blindness that prevents them from seeing God's glory.
Paul connects the Holy Spirit directly to the divine presence of the Lord, affirming that the Spirit operating in the New Covenant is fully God.
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (or liberty) is freedom from something, and freedom for something.
Paul contrasts the "old covenant" (the strict Law of Moses) with the "new covenant" (grace through Jesus Christ). The old law condemned people because no one could follow it perfectly. The Spirit frees believers from that system of fear and failure.
In the Old Testament, Moses had to wear a veil over his face to hide God's fading glory from the people. Today, the Holy Spirit removes the spiritual veil from our hearts, allowing us to see God's glory clearly and relate to Him intimately and without fear.
This verse serves as the bridge into the next verse, 2 Corinthians 3:18, which explains that because of this Spirit-given freedom, believers are actively being transformed into the image of Christ from glory to glory. It is not a "freedom to do whatever you want", but rather the spiritual freedom and boldness to know, love, and reflect God's character.
God gives us freedom, not to live in what we humans see as a good life, or doing what we perceive as doing good, giving to the needy and church, nor is it a licence to continue in sin. But rather, it is freedom to serve God and live life according to His plans and purposes in total submission and walk in His righteousness, for His glory.
For this reason, Jesus said, “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. “Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.””
Matthew 16:25-28 NKJV
