Here, Paul describes the "fruit of the Spirit", the nine positive character traits (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) that the Holy Spirit naturally produces in a Christian's life. Rather than rules to force, they reflect the inner change that comes from knowing God and His indwelling Holy Spirit (GALATIANS 5:16-26).
The Apostle contrasts these traits with the "works of the flesh". While human effort creates "works," the Spirit grows "fruit" naturally from a healthy, living relationship with Christ.
The phrase "against such things there is no law", means no religious or civil law punishes these virtues. People who live this way fulfill the true heart of God's law without needing strict rules.
The Nine fruits derived from love, come from the Spirit Himself and draws us to care for others deeply without expecting anything in return.
The Holy Spirit brings a steady happiness that does not depend on easy life circumstances.
As a result, peace comes within inside our hearts that helps us to get along well with other people with patience and understanding.
The Spirit leads and empowers us to calmly show mercy when people test us, expressing kindness and treating others with a warm, gentle heart.
The Spirit leads us to do what is right and helpful in everyday actions, and by depending on His faithfulness completely and being loyal to Him, we fulfil His plans and purposes in our lives.
Treating others with care and humility instead of harshness takes self-control, managing your thoughts, words, and actions-taking them captive and bringing them to the obedience of Christ (2 CORINTHIANS 10:5), instead of giving in to sudden anger or bad habits and the lust of the flesh.
“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”
