This verse is the practical conclusion of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia. It calls Christians to a life of active goodness, urgency, and specific care for fellow believers.
In the original Greek, the word for goodness (agathosune) means actively doing good deeds rather than just avoiding bad behaviour. Believers are called to meet the tangible physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of others, especially of those who are the of the household of faith.
Believers are not meant to isolate themselves or restrict kindness only to their own circles. The command extends outward to everyone in society, neighbours, strangers, and those outside the faith.
While goodness is universal, Paul places a special emphasis (malista, meaning "most of all" or "above all") on caring for fellow Christians ("the household of faith"). Early believers faced intense social pressure, rejection, and hardship, as many do today, making mutual support vital.
Paul frames life as a limited-time planting season. The phrase "as we have opportunity" urges believers not to procrastinate or grow weary in doing what is right, sharing the Good News, knowing that a spiritual harvest will follow.
While opinions differ among some biblical scholars regarding whether the verse addresses individual Christian responsibility versus collective church-sponsored benevolence programs, it a direct mandate for all followers of Christ individually and as a body, to live generously and do what is good.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
