Psalm 119 is both the longest psalm and the longest chapter in the bible.
Possibly written by Ezra after the Temple was rebuilt (EZRA 6:14-15) as a repetitive meditation on the power and beauty of God’s word, and how it helps us to live pure lives and grow in faith.
Such repetition was common in the Hebrew culture because people did not have personal copies of the Scriptures to read like us today, so they memorised God’s word and passed it on verbally. The structure of this psalm made it less difficult to remember.
There are in this lengthy psalm, twenty two carefully constructed sections; each section containing eight verses, all beginning with the letter of its section from the Hebrew alphabet.
Within the psalm, eight words for God’s law occur again and again: law testimonies, promise, precepts, statutes, commandments, judgements, and word. These words help us to elaborate the application of God’s law in our everyday life and to the destiny of Israel.
The Hebrew word torah, translated as “law,” means “instruction” or “direction.” The law was not designed as a means of salvation, rather it was a means for the Israelites to learn how to live as God’s holy people.
The psalmist continually describes the law as a great blessing, for it was God’s gracious revelation to His people for their own good (DEUTERONOMY 6:1-3).
The law mercifully points out the right paths to follow. God’s word is the only sure guide for us to follow to live pure and holy lives pleasing to God.
