This verse is a promise of Christ’s guiding presence during conflict resolution and church discipline. Rather than a rule for small group attendance, it confirms divine backing for believers addressing unrepentant sin in love.
This conflict and accountability passage (Matthew 18:15-20) outlines a structured, four-step process for confronting a fellow believer about sin, shifting from a private conversation to bringing in witnesses.
Two or three echoes the ancient Jewish legal principle from Deuteronomy 19:15, which required two or three witnesses to establish the truth of a matter.
Gathering in His name means the witnesses are operating under Jesus’ authority, seeking reconciliation, and following His specific teachings rather than their own personal agendas.
This verse is often cited to encourage small prayer groups or to explain why God is present even when Sunday church attendance is low. While Christians universally believe God is present with them everywhere, this specific verse is focused on the judicial and restorative functions of the church.
Jesus is assuring His followers that when they carry out difficult, uncomfortable tasks of correction and church discipline, they do not do so alone. His presence in the midst of the "two or three" ensures that the congregation's actions are sanctioned and guided by heaven.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
Please share to our brothers and sisters all around the world.
