My beloved, at its core, this verse is about the limits of human effort and the power of divine grace. It reminds us that while we cannot earn our way to salvation or conquer life's biggest hurdles on our own, God's unlimited power can overcome any barrier.
This statement was spoken by Jesus regarding wealth and salvation following his interaction with the "rich young ruler" (Matthew 19:16-22).
A wealthy young man asked Jesus what he needed to do to inherit eternal life. When Jesus told him to sell all his possessions and give to the poor, the man walked away sad because he was very wealthy.
Jesus used this to point out to His disciples how difficult it is for rich people to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, as wealth often breeds self-reliance, greed, and a misplaced sense of security.
Jesus disciples were astounded by Jesus' words, asking, "Who then can be saved?" (Matthew 19:25). In their culture, wealth was often viewed as a direct sign of God's blessing. If wealthy people who were "blessed" struggled, who could possibly be saved?
Jesus responded with verse 26.
“But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.””
Matthew 19:26 NKJV
His answer says it all.
Jesus was teaching that no human being can save themselves. We cannot buy our way into heaven, work our way there through perfect behavior, or achieve moral perfection on our own strength. Left to our own devices, salvation is totally out of our reach."But with God all things are possible": While humans cannot save themselves, God can. Salvation is a free gift of grace from God, not something earned by human merit. Beyond just salvation, this principle applies to all of life's struggles—God possesses the power to transform broken situations, change human hearts, and make a way where there seems to be no way.
This verse shifts the focus from self-reliance to God-reliance. Instead of boasting about our own goodness or stressing over our human limitations, it encourages believers to place their trust completely in God's sovereignty and grace.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
