John 1:1 starts with the moment of creation and contemplates eternity past.
What Jesus taught and what He did are inseparably connected to who He is,
fully man and fully God (1-14).
John wrote to all believers, both Jews and Gentiles.
As one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, John writes with credibility and as an eye witness of exactly who Jesus is and His wonderful works.
His book is not a biography, rather, it is a thematic presentation of Jesus life.
Much of John’s original audience had Greek backgrounds, and the Greek culture encouraged the worship of many mythological gods.
John shows us that Jesus is not only different, but by far, superior to these god’s of mythology.
The Word was a term used by Theologians and philosophers, both Jews and Greeks in different ways. In Hebrew Scripture, the Word was an agent of creation (PSALM 33:6), the source of God’s message to His people through the prophets (HOSEA 4:1), God’s law, and His standard of holiness (PSALM 119:11).
In Greek philosophy, the Word was the principle of reason that governed the world, while Hebrew’s thought the Word was another expression of God. John’s description clearly shows he is speaking of Jesus (1:14), a man that he knew and loved, but indeed, at the same time, was the Creator of all the universe, the ultimate revelation of God, and a living picture of God’s perfection, His holiness, and He who creates, sustains, and holds all creation together (COLOSSIANS 1:17).
To say, “Jesus is God” was seen as blasphemous by the Jewish readers. To Greek readers, “the Word became human,” (1:14) was utterly unthinkable.
But to John, the Word was the Good News of Jesus Christ.
God’s Word is always with God, and the Word was God, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
Hebrews 4:12-13 NKJV
God’s Word actively works within us bringing change to our nature-it transforms us by the renewing of our minds that we become more Christ like in our attitudes, responses, agendas, and behaviour; it gives us wisdom, discernment and truth. But the Word of God can only work within us when we take it in, ask for understanding and revelation, and operate in it in obedience to God.
It is like medication that undoes the work of the devil; but like any medicine, you have to take it regularly. Unlike other medications, one cannot overdose on God’s medicine, the more you take in the better.
It has healing power like no other medicine; furthermore, it brings peace and joy upon all who take it in and follow its instructions; that is to cooperate and walk with God.
The peace that comes with it is God’s peace that surpasses all understanding, and guard’s their hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7), and the joy in the Lord is our strength (NEHEMIAH 8:10).
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Romans 12:1-2 NKJV
Jesus Christ is supreme over all creation and realms.
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
“And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.”
Revelation 5:13-14 NKJV
Therefore, since EVERY creature in heaven and on earth and under the sun worshiped Him, He Himself is not a creature or any created being. He is God, He always was, still is, and always will be.
Yet, He is the Lamb that was slain (REVELATION 5:12;13;8), and also was risen (MATHEW 28:6).
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.””
Revelation 1:8 NKJV
Furthermore, it is written, “And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.””
Revelation 21:6-8 NKJV
Like the Colossian believers, we must believe in the deity of Christ, that Jesus is God, otherwise our faith would be hollow, without substance, misdirected, and meaningless.
“Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.“
I John 2:18-23 NKJV
Therefore, surely we must oppose all those who deny Christ, those who say Jesus was just a prophet or good teacher. Jesus is God from everlasting to everlasting.
For “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
John 1:1-5 NKJV
All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.
