Written by King David, this verse is an honest, vulnerable prayer asking God to examine the inner life rather than just the outward appearance.
The Hebrew concept of the heart (lev) includes the mind, will, and emotional center. David is not telling God something He doesn’t already know since the first verse of the psalm notes God already knows everything. Instead, he is asking God to reveal those hidden motives and blind spots back to David so he can see himself clearly.
David’s example is an example to follow if we want to be right before God. The first step of change is acknowledging our own faults, confronting them and actively choosing to change.
It’s encouraging to know, that when we do our best, God will do the rest.
The words “Test me" come from a root meaning to refine metal. It implies a process of testing to bring impurities, faulty attitudes, or secret sins to the surface so they can be dealt with and purified.
David prayed the words “And know my anxious thoughts", for God sees the internal worries, fears, and chaotic mental loops that often stem from a lack of trust or a reliance on self. Bringing them to God is an invitation to swap worry for divine peace.
The earlier part of Psalm 139 celebrates God's total omniscience (all-knowing), omnipresence (everywhere-present), and creative power. Right before verse 23 (in verses 19–22), David expresses strong anger toward the wicked who oppose God.
Praying "search me" right after condemning others acts as a spiritual safety check. David stops looking outward at everyone else's faults and immediately turns the spotlight back onto his own soul to ensure his own heart remains pure.
We Christians must focus our minds on our own faults and failures before we can even consider looking at the sins of others.
We must remove the log out of our own eyes before focusing on the spec in the eyes of others (Mathew 7:3-5; Luke 6:41-42).
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
Please share to our brothers and sisters all around the world.
