This verse is the second half of the Shema (meaning hear or listen), the foundational declaration of Jewish faith, and is called by Jesus in the New Testament the greatest of all commandments. It calls for a whole-persons undivided devotion to God rather than mere outward compliance with rules.
The core components of the command is directed at our inner minds, will, choices, and emotions, where we make decisions and direct our affections.
The Soul is your very life, your mind, will and emotions, your core identity, and spiritual self, and needs to show complete loyalty in every situation.
Your strength is your outer energy, physical power, time, actions, and material resources given entirely to honor God.
The context and significance of the Shema connection is that it immediately follows verse 4 ("Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one"), linking the unique identity of God directly to the absolute response of human love.
Jesus quoted this verse in Matthew 22:37-38, affirming that authentic faith centres on total love for God, which then naturally overflows into loving one's neighbour.
The verses immediately following (Deuteronomy 6:6-9) explain that this love is not compartmentalized; it must be remembered internally, discussed constantly within the family, and woven into everyday daily life.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
Please share to our brothers and sisters all around the world.
