Here, Mathew explains that “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many".
He defines Jesus' mission as sacrificial service, not earthly power.
It redefines greatness as humility and establishes that His death is the payment to free humanity from sin and death.
Jesus challenges His disciples' request for high positions by stating that greatness in his kingdom is measured by humble service to others, not dominating them, as the Gentile leaders do.
Jesus, though He was King, indeed, King of all kings and LORD of all lords (REVELATION 19:16), came into the world, taking the humble position of a slave, offering a model of humility and active care (PHILIPPIANS 2:6-8).
The term "ransom" signifies a price paid to release a slave or captive.
Jesus is saying that His spilled blood, is the exchange payment to save humanity from slavery to sin and death.
"For Many", refers to all who believe in Him, indicating that His sacrifice is sufficient for everyone, but only effective for those who accept and believe it.
The verse comes after James and John ask for top positions, and is a message to all believers today, showing that Jesus is correcting their misguided, selfish ambition and emphasizing that His path leads to the cross, and each must carry his own cross (MATHEW 16:24; MARK 8:34; LUKE 9:23; LUKE 14:27).
This Scripture calls on all believers today, to adopt a posture of selfless sacrificial service, limiting their own rights and denying their preferences to serve others, mirroring Christ’s sacrifice.
Neither active service, nor funding, nor evangelism, is the sole responsibility of the so called leadership of the church, but the whole body of Christ.
Christ is the head and He directs the whole body according to His plans and purposes, “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”
Ephesians 4:11-16 NKJV
