Here, we are being told that those who show compassion and forgiveness to others will, in turn, receive the same kindness from people as well as from God.
Mercy in biblical terms, is both a feeling of deep empathy for others suffering and the active pursuit to relieve it. It includes withholding a deserved punishment, forgiving an offense, and caring for the vulnerable.
When one treats others with grace rather than judgment, he or she fosters a spirit of reconciliation that often results in them extending grace back.
It reflects a spiritual truth taught throughout the Bible. For example, in the Lord's Prayer, your capacity to receive God’s forgiveness and grace is closely tied to your willingness to forgive others.
Grace, is not a transaction, it is an act of mercy; this verse is not meant to imply that you earn your way into heaven by being nice. Rather, it describes a free "blessed" (joyful) life that is able to remove all offence.
Christians who have genuinely experienced the mercy of God will naturally overflow with mercy toward others.
Jesus said, ““For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Matthew 6:14-15 NKJV
Since we are all sinners in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness, it makes sense that unless we forgive others, Jesus cannot forgive us.
It is true to say that we are saved by grace, but grace does not override justice. If it did, Jesus would have had no reason to die on a cross for us.
Jesus didn’t come into the world for the righteous. He came to save the sinners, and gave up His life in the most extreme and painful way that they might live.
Surely, just as He showed us sinners mercy, we can respond by showing one another the same level of grace.
All glory be to God forever and ever! Amen.
Please share to our brothers and sisters all around the world.
